Hans Holbein the Younger was a German artist and King's Painter to Henry VIII. He is well known for painting the portrait of Anna of Cleves which led to Henry and Anna's marriage. He is mentioned by the queens during the song Haus of Holbein, as well as a couple of times immediately after.
Trivia[]
- No certain portraits survive of Anne Boleyn that were painted by Holbein; this could be because her memory was purged following her execution for treason, incest, and adultery in 1536.
- Around 1537, Holbein painted the most well-known portrait of Jane Seymour.
- Holbein supposedly sketched a portrait drawing of Katherine Howard; however, this has not been confirmed.
- Holbein’s portrait of Anna of Cleves now hangs in the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. A miniature version can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England.
- While writing the show, Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss considered adding Holbein as a character because they thought he "was a hilarious idea for a character"; however, they instead decided that the cast would be comprised of the queens alone.[1]
