"No Way" is the third song featured in Six the Musical. It is the second track on the London cast recording and the fourth track on the Broadway cast recording. It is Catherine of Aragon's solo.

Theme[]

The song recounts how Catherine was loyal to Henry throughout their entire marriage, even while she knew he was actively cheating on her. She remained silent about his acts and put up with his behaviour. It also discusses how Catherine fought for years against the annulment, bringing up Henry's excuses for divorcing her and how Catherine knelt in front of Henry at the Legatine Court on 21 June 1529, explaining every way she had been a good wife to him. She declares that because Henry married her, she will be queen until the end of her life.

Lyrics[]

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way
There's no way

You must agree that baby
In all the time I've been by your side
I've never lost control
No matter how many times I knew you lied
Have my golden rule
Gotta keep my cool
Yeah, baby

[ENSEMBLE]
You know she's gotta keep it cool

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
And even though you've had your fun
Running around with some pretty young thing
And even though you've had one son
With someone who don't own a wedding ring
No matter what I heard
I didn't say a word
No, baby

[ENSEMBLE]
You know she never said a word

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
I've put up with your sh–
Like every single day
But now it's time to shh
And listen when I say

You must think that I'm crazy
You wanna replace me
Baby, there's no no no no no no no way
If you think for a moment
I'd grant you annulment, just hold up
There's n-n-n-n-n-n-no way
No way
No way
There's n-n-n-n-n-n-no way
No way
No way
There's n-n-n-n-n-n-no way
There's no way

So you read a Bible verse that I'm cursed
'Cause I was your brother's wife
You say it's a pity 'cause quoting Leviticus
I'll end up kiddy-less all my life
Well daddy weren't you there
When I gave birth to Mary?
(spoken)
Aw, hi baby

[ENSEMBLE]
Daughters are so easy to forget

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
You're just so full of sh–
Must think that I'm naïve
I won't back down, won't shh
And no, I'll never leave

You must think that I'm crazy
You wanna replace me
Baby, there's n-n-n-n-n-n-no way
If you thought it'd be funny
To send me to a nunnery
Honey, there's no way
No way
No way
There's n-n-n-n-n-n-no way
No way
No way
There's n-n-n-n-n-n-no way
There's no way
Hey

(Woo)
(Let's go)
(Woo)
(Here we go)

You've got me down on my knees
Please tell me what you think I've done wrong
Been humble, been loyal
I've tried to swallow my pride all along
If you could just explain a single thing I've done
To cause you pain, I'll go

(spoken)
No?

You've got nothing to say
I'm not going away
There's no way

You must think that I'm crazy
You wanna replace me
Baby, there's n-n-n-n-n-n-no way
You made me your wife
So I'll be queen to the end of my life
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way
No way
No way
N-n-n-n-nope n-nope n-nope no
No way
No way
There's n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-no way
There's no way

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
So now you tell me it's over
You say that something's not right
But, babe, that's not what you said last night

[ENSEMBLE]
You said something different last night

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
You're chatting all the excuses
But one thing you can't ignore
Is I keep you coming back for more

[ENSEMBLE]
And more and more and more and more

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
I've put up with your sh–
Like every single day

[ENSEMBLE]
Woah-oh, woah-oh

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
But now it's time to shh
And listen when I say

You must think that I'm crazy
You wanna replace me
Baby, there's

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON & ENSEMBLE]
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
If you thought you could leave me
You must think I'm naïve, please believe me
There's

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON & ENSEMBLE]
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
No way
No way
There's

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON & ENSEMBLE]
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
No way
No way
There's

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON & ENSEMBLE]
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
There's no way

You tell me "keep it on the down-low"
While you go with someone new
So you have your cake and eat it too

[ENSEMBLE]
You can't have your cake and eat it too

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
You say that you don't deserve me
So now you've got to desert me
But you'll get your just deserts
See, sugar, I'm the best you ever knew

You left me so cut up
When you walked out the door

[ENSEMBLE]
Woah-oh, woah-oh

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
Now it's your time to shut up
Yeah, baby, that's for sure

If you think for a moment
I'd grant you annulment, just hold on
There's

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON & ENSEMBLE]
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
If you thought it'd be funny
To send me to a nunnery
Honey, there's

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON & ENSEMBLE]
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
No way
No way
There's

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON & ENSEMBLE]
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
No way
No way
There's

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON & ENSEMBLE]
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
There's no way

I still think back to our first kiss
On that night we made a promise
You told me you'd never let me go
You said that there was no way
We'd ever have to break up
Well, now it's time to wake up and see
Though you lied to me
There's no way

You must think that I'm crazy
You wanna replace me
Baby, there's

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON & ENSEMBLE]
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
If you thought you could leave me
You must think I'm naïve, please believe me
There's

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON & ENSEMBLE]
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON (ENSEMBLE)]
There's no way (no way)
No way (no way)
There's n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-no way
There's no way (no way)
I'm leaving you (no way)
There's

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON & ENSEMBLE]
N-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-n-no
N-n-n-n-n-n-no way

[CATHERINE OF ARAGON]
There's no way

Trivia[]

  • At the BroadwayCon panel, Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss revealed that No Way was the first song they had written together for the show.[1]
    • Toby also stated that this song has gone through more revisions than any other song in the show.
  • The lines, "And even though you've had your fun/Running around with some pretty young thing/And even though you've had one son/With someone who don't own a wedding ring" are about Henry's affair with Bessie Blount and their illegitimate son, Henry FitzRoy.
  • The lines, "So you read a Bible verse that I'm cursed/'Cause I was your brother's wife/You say it's a pity 'cause quoting Leviticus/I'll end up kiddy-less all my life" refer to the Bible passage Leviticus 20:21, which reads, "If a man marries his brother's wife, it is an act of impurity; he has dishonored his brother. They will be childless". Catherine had previously been married to Henry's brother, Arthur Tudor, before he died.
  • The line, "Been humble, been loyal" is a reference to Catherine's motto, "Humble and Loyal".
  • In live performances, the performer playing Catherine usually says, "Oh, you don't remember?" instead of "Aw, hi baby".
  • In live performances, the performer playing Catherine says, "Give it up for Maria on the drums!" during the drum solo.
